The East Texas Council of Governments has received a copy of the East Texas portion of the "Texas Closed Landfill Inventory" from the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC). TNRCC, under a contract with Southwest Texas State University, and in cooperation with the 24 regional Council of Governments in the State, has located over 4,000 closed and abandoned municipal solid waste landfills throughout Texas. Over 200 sites were found in the East Texas area. A strong effort was made to map as many of these sites as possible and to document owners/operators of the sites.
