This is the true story of Harriet Potter Ames, based on her own writings, memoirs, and diaries. Known as the "kishi woman" to the Caddo Indians, or the "Bravest Woman in Texas", Harriet Potter Ames tells her story of overcoming many hardships to establish a homestead and a family in Texas.
This book was recommended to me by a friend as I considered moving from Texas to New York City. I read the book on the flight to New York, and found myself asking the question: "Why do I want to leave Texas? With all of the natural beauty of the land and the people, who could leave once they had seen Texas?" I credit Harriet Potter Ames' story with not only keeping me in Texas, but also beginning my fascination and admiration of the beauty of Caddo Lake. |
