It was the summer of 1988. I had just completed my second year at the University of Arkansas at Fayettville. I was a part of a twelve member group that would be travelling to Scotland to work with the Churches of Christ for a two-week campaign in the "new town" of East Kilbride just outside of Glasgow, Scotland. We left from Fayetteville, Arkansas changed planes in Dallas, Texas and flew to Gatwick Airport in London, England. (I should mention that we had an emergency stop at JFK Airport in New York City due to several of the multi-redundant fuel pumps on the plane failing. We had to dump our fuel over the Atlantic, circle back to NYC and deboard while repairs were made. This was at about 2am in NYC, so the airport was shut down. We sat, locked in a single terminal at JFK for five hours before reboarding and completing our journey.) We took a train from Gatwick to Victoria Station in central London. From here we rode in "hackneys" (taxis) to the downtown YMCA, where we would be staying for our five days in London prior to our train journey to Glasgow.
During our stay in London, we visited the requisite sites... |
