Sindarin Personal Pronouns Reconstructed
Very
few of the Sindarin personal pronouns are known. This reconstruction of the
missing ones draws on ideas by Lothenon, Aaron, and R. Derdzinski. I thank them
all for their insights. Future publications may provide Tolkien's actual
pronouns. Attested (known) pronouns are in bold red.
Nominative: pronoun is the subject: I
give it to him. You saw him do
it.
Possessive: belonging to: It is mine.
You are his friends.
Accusative: pronoun is the object: I give
it to him. You saw him
do it.
Dative: pronoun is the indirect object: I give it to him.
You saw him do it.
Suffixed dative: preposition “to” is attached to the pronoun: I give it to him.
Reflexive dative: pronoun reflects back to subject: You gave it to yourself.
