The Calendar of the Elves
Days
of the Week
The Elves had six days of the week (Q. enquië):
Star-day
- Q. Elenya,
S. Orgilion
Sun-day - Q. Anarya,
S. Oranor
Moon-day - Q. Isilya,
S. Orithil
Tree-day - Q. Aldúya,
S. Orgaladhad
Heaven-day - Q. Menelya,
S. Ormenel
Valar/Powers-day - Q. Valanya
or Tárion,
S. Orbelain
or Rodyn
The last one was the most important day of the week, corresponding to what we
consider Sunday.
Seasons
of the Year
The
Elves counted six seasons in a period they called in Quenya coranar
"sun-round" or loa
"growth", and in Sindarin idhrinn
or în, which we
would call a year:
Spring - Q. tuilë,
S. ethuil
Summer - Q. lairë,
S. laer
Autumn - Q. yávië,
S. iavas
Fading - Q. quellë or
lasse-lanta, S. firith
or narbeleth
Winter - Q. hrívë,
S. rhîw
Stirring - Q. coirë,
S. echuir
Summer
and winter both lasted for 72 days; the other seasons were each 54 days long.
In every idhrinn there were five additional days that were not considered a part of any season and were celebrated as holidays. Between Autumn and Fading were three middle-days called Q. enderi (S. enedhoer?). They were named Q. tuilérë, loëndë, and yáviérë. The first day of the year was Q. yestarë, and the last day of the year was Q. mettarë, S. penninor. Every twelfth year the middle-days were doubled to number six (the elvish equivalent of a leap-year).
This produced an idhrinn of 365 days, but the Elves reckoned by Q. yén (a period that is 144 years), and every third yén had to be shortened by three days - eliminating the doubled middle-days one time - to adjust the calendar.
