The Monday Night Jam Session
@ Tom’s Bar – B – Q, Bryan

What is a Jam Session?  The description is as varied as the individuals that attend.  Basically a jam session is a group of individuals, both male and female representing all walks of life, that gather together to enjoy the commonality of a form of music, bluegrass, that has been part of the American Culture throughout it’s history.

Tom’s Bar-B-Q is located at 3610 College Avenue in Bryan, Texas and each Monday evening people begin arriving as early as 5:30pm to enjoy the great food and to get good seats for the jam.   The musicians themselves, both novice and professional and with some traveling from over 100 miles away, begin gathering about the same time so they can enjoy the great food before the jam starts.

There is no stage, nor microphones nor electric instruments and most of all no pressure.  People begin by sitting in a circle, which widens as more people arrive.    Each individual then has the opportunity to pick a song that will then be played by all.  The great thing about a jam is that as your turn to pick a song comes up you can just pass.  It is an excellent environment for novice players to gain experience and learn from more experienced musicians.

Along with the musicians there are a host of spectators.  Many families have made Monday evening their night out for some great food and entertainment.   The most enjoyable part for me personally is when families arrive and bring their children for the first time.  That look of amazement on a child’s face as they watch the musicians play.   I get the biggest thrill when a child comes up to look and touch my Banjo.  For more information about the Jam Session contact Tom’s Bar-B-Q at 409-846-4275 or contact Rodney O’Connor at (rplos@myriad.net)
