Game Summaries

01-04-99 Vs John Tyler Lady Lions.  Ladycats won 8-1.  The Ladycats opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a goal by Miranda Logan, assisted by Amanda Zapata.  Dana Walton found the goal in the 32nd minute off a cross by Jessica Lanphaer.  Logan scored again in the 37th minute, assisted by Lanphaer.  Lanphaer scored in the 48th minute on a thru ball by Erin Kelly, and Kori Lough found Brittany Clements with a cross, who then put the ball in the goal in the 56th minute.  In the 60th and 63td minute Lough assisted Walton on two more goals, completing Walton's hat trick.  The last Ladycats goal came in the 66th minute on a goal by Tory Mills, assisted by Jennifer Kamer.  The Lady Lions scored their lone goal at the 70th minute mark.
01-08-99 Vs Batrop.  Ladycats lost 2-4.  The Ladycats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but from that point on the offensive power of Bastrop was too much for the young defense of Whitehouse.  Bastrop scored late in the first half, and then 3 more in the second, handing the Ladycats a 4-2 defeat.  Coach John Absalom commended Starkey for her good play in the goal, as she made several excellent saves.  The Ladycats goals came from Miranda Logan, assisted by Kori Lough in the 26th minute and Jessica Lanphaer assisted by Leslie
O’Kelly in the 32nd minute.

Vs Killeen Ellison.  Ladycats won 7-0. Tory Mills opened the scoring for the Ladycats off an assist by Amanda Zapata in the 8th minute, opening the floodgates for 6 more goals soon after.  Goals were made by Dana Walton assisted by Logan, Jessica Kamer assisted by Lough, Logan again with an unassisted goal, Kamer assisted by Mills, Walton assisted Kamer, and then Kamer assisted again for Erin Kelly to finish the scoring.

Vs Huntsville.  Ladycats won 5-0. The cold front had moved in during the night but this did not hamper the Whitehouse offense, as they posted a 5-0 win.  Kamer scored the first goal for the Ladycats with an assist from Mills in the 12 minute. Lough then got an unassisted goal at the 23 minute mark, then scored again in the 32nd minute off an assist by Logan.  The Ladycats were awarded a penalty kick in the 48th minute and goalkeeper Starkey was called out from her goal to take the kick, which she calmly netted for the 4th Whitehouse goal of the match.  The final goal came from Walton, assisted by Lough in the 62nd minute.

Vs Alief Elsik.  Ladycats won 3-0. The the first Whitehouse goal came in the 4th minute as Lough took a free kick, which Logan quickly touched over to Lanphaer who put the ball in the net.  At the 32nd minute mark, sweeper Brittany Clements scored on a 25 yard free kick, and the last goal was by Logan assisted by Walton in the 57th minute.  Coach Absalom complimented the defensive play of Mills, Kelly, Shelly Meredith and Clements for holding Alief Elsik scoreless in the game. Absalom reported that the Ladycats played well in the tournament, especially for a young team, and he has high hopes for the future as
the team gains experience and gets a few more games under their belts.

Amanda Starkey, the Ladycats goalkeeper was named to the All Tournament Team.

01-12-99 Vs Nacodoches.  The Ladycats won 2-1.  It was a scoreless game at halftime, with both teams playing well.  Three minutes into the second half the Ladycats got on the board with a goal by Kori Lough, assisted by a perfect cross from Miranda Logan.  Logan took the ball deep to right side goal line and fired a cross perfectly onto the foot of Lough, who was positioned near the right post.  Lough redirected the ball into the lower right corner to complete the text book goal.  The game remained 1-0 until the 68th minute when a speedy Nacogdoches forward broke away and dribbled toward the Whitehouse goal.  Ladycats goalkeeper Amanda Starkey came hard off her line and dived for the ball as the Nacogdoches player cut around her.  This effort by Starkey prevented a goal, but both players went down in the collision and Starkey was shown the red card, and a penalty kick was awarded to Nacogdoches.  The kick was successful and the game was tied, 1-1.  The Ladycats, now playing with only 10 players, never gave up and seemed to pick up the pace.  With five minutes left in the game, Erin Kelly, in a crowd, got off a cross from the left side and Logan collected the ball in the penaly area.  Logan made a nice first touch, beat the defender, and fired a shot past the Nacogdoches goal keeper for the game winner.
01-16-99 Vs Nacogdoches.  Tied 3-3.  The Ladycats opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a goal from Erin Kelly, assisted by a corner kick from Tory Mills. Soon after, in the 7th minute, Nacogdoches answered with a goal, also off a corner kick.  In the12th minute Miranda Logan found Kelly on a pass, and again Kelly found the net with a good shot from eighteen yards out.  Three minutes later the same combination of Logan to Kelly produced the Ladycats third goal, completing Kelly’s hat trick and giving Whitehouse a 3-1 lead.  The score remained 3-1 until early in the second half when Nacogdoches scored on a good shot just inside the right post.  Then with just three minutes left in the game, Nacogdoches was awarded a penalty kick, which was converted and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.  Amanda Zapata, Brittany Clements, and Jennifer Kammer made some key plays in the second half to stop some very dangerous runs by the speedy Nacogdoches striker to preserve the tie.

Vs Palestine.  The Ladycats won 6-0.  The scoring began in the 3td minute with a goal by Dana Walton assisted by Lezlee O’Kelly.  Logan scored an unassisted goal in the 7th minute and Walton got another one in the 32nd  minute, assisted by Mary Zanolini.  Kelly scored off an assist from Logan in the 33td and then again in the 35th minute with an unassisted goal.  Mills closed out the scoring for the Ladycats in the 68th minute with a 35 yard free kick shot from the left side that went just inside the right goal post.

Vs Pine Tree.  The Ladycats won 1-0.  The only goal of the game came in the 50th minute when O’Kelly found Logan with a pass, which Logan collected and touched a couple times before launching an eighteen yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal.  Coach John Absalom credited good defensive play and strong goalkeeping by Amanda Starkey, saying this was a good win for the Ladycats.

Vs Chapel Hill.  The Ladycats won, 4-0.  Kelly scored first in the 16th minute, then Kammer found the goal with a hard and low 25 yard shot in the 29th minute.  Clements scored in the 55th minute on a penalty kick, and also closed out the scoring for the Ladycats with another goal in the 58th minute, assisted by Kelly.

Tory Mills from Whitehouse was named the Tournament MVP, and All Tournament honors also went to the Ladycats’ Erin Kelly, Jessica Kammer, Brittany Clements, and Miranda Logan.

01-19-99 Vs Longview.  The Ladycats tied 0-0.  It was a hard fought contest, ending in a 0-0 tie.  Both teams had several goal scoring chances, with the Ladycats having the best of the play during the second half. The good conditioning of the Ladycats proved beneficial as they picked up the pace the last twenty minutes and had some good scoring opportunities, but just could not manage to find the back of the net.  Whitehouse goalkeeper Amanda Starkey make some outstanding saves to preserve the shut out, the seventh shut out this season.
01-23-99 Vs Paris.  The Ladycats won 5-0.  The match was totally dominated by the Ladycats, who had numerous scoring opportunities and were bit unlucky not to score several more goals.  Brittany Clements opened the scoring for the Ladycats at the thirty  minute mark with an unassisted goal.  Clements was in a crowd, fighting for the ball, then suddenly took a one touch shot that went about twenty-five yards into the net over the opposing goalkeeper’s head.  Clements again scored in the 32nd minute assisted by Dana Walton.  This goal began with a good clearing pass from sweeper Amanda Zapata. Zapata’s long pass hit the ground and bounced toward Walton, who was positioned at the eighteen yard line.  Walton smartly headed the ball forward on an angle to Clements, who gathered it about 12 yards out and fired a perfect shot past the goalkeeper.  Then in the 35th minute Lezlee O’Kelly scored on a 20 yard left foot shot, assisted by Walton.  Clements completed her hat trick for the day with another goal in 37th minute, again assisted by Walton.  In the second half, the Ladycats only managed one goal, this coming off the foot of Erin Kelly.  Jessica Lanphaer, with good hustle, won the ball deep in attacking territory and crossed a perfect
ball to Kelly, who finished the play from about 6 yards out.
01-26-99 Vs Lufkin.  The Ladycats won 1-0.  On Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Lufkin to take on the Lady Panthers in a non-district soccer match.  The only score of the game came in the 11th minute when a Lufkin player was whistled for a handball foul in the Whitehouse penalty area.  Brittany Clements was called upon by Coach Absalom to take the penalty kick, which she struck well into the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Ladycats a 1-0 lead.  The game was a back and forth affair after that, with the Lady Panthers forwards often threatening, but the Ladycats defense never faltered.  Whitehouse also had some scoring opportunities, with Erin Kelly once hitting the right post with a good left foot shot.   The Ladycat defenders Amanda Zapata, Tory Mills, Jennifer Stone, Brittany Clements, and Jennifer Kammer played well, and goalkeeper Amanda Starkey had another outstanding game for the shutout.  Late in the game Kelly was called back into the defense and did a good job to help preserve the shutout and the game.
02-02-99 Vs Kilgore.  Ladycats won 3-2. What a night!  In every kind of sport, from time to time, there are games that keep you coming back, games that remind you how much fun and satisfaction there can be from participating in athletics.  And Tuesday night was one of those games for the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team. Whitehouse was hosting Kilgore, whom they had never beaten in the history of Ladycats soccer. There was excitement in the air as the game began, and both teams looked ready to play.  Kilgore scored first in the 15th minute off a good shot from about 15 yards out.  In the 30th minute the Ladycats had two good scoring chances as both Kori Lough and Tory Mills crossed good passes to Dana Walton, coming down the left side.  Walton, with good hustle, got her foot on both passes but touched them just wide of the goal, being unlucky not to have two goals in quick succession.  But in the 37th minute Walton made a good crossing pass which bounced off a defender toward Erin Kelly, who took the quick shot and scored from 22 yards out, making it a 1-1 game.  The first half ended 1-1, but Kilgore took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored a goal within 25 seconds.  This was a tremendous blow to the Ladycats, and a lot of teams would have taken this opportunity to fold their tents and quit.  But as they have shown before in earlier games, the Ladycats seem to get stronger and show no quit in them as the game wears on. In the 64th minute a defender from Kilgore was called for a foul in the penalty area and Whitehouse was awarded a penalty kick.  Coach John Absalom called upon Kelly to assume the pressure of the moment, and was duly rewarded as she stepped up and beat the keeper, putting the game back into a tie at 2-2.  The game then resumed with about 16 minutes left to play, and the Ladycats were determined not only to hold on to a tie, but to win the game. With about two minutes left to play, Miranda Logan collected the ball on the right side and crossed it into the penalty area.  The Kilgore goalkeeper came streaking out toward the ball, with the Ladycats’ Kelly running to it at a full sprint.  They converged on the ball simultaneously at the six yard line, and Kelly touched the ball off of and around the Kilgore goalkeeper, and now the ball was rolling slowly towards the end line, just right of the goal.  Kelly and a Kilgore defender were charging toward the ball, hoping to get to it before the ball rolled out of play.    All spectators, players, and coaches were on their feet, watching the play unfold.  At the last second, Kelly, just a half step ahead of the Kilgore defender, got a foot on the ball and cut it back inside the right post and into the net.  Wild celebration broke out all over the field and in the stands, and Kelly’s teammates were jumping around with joy and pounding her in congratulations as they lined up for the kickoff.  The Ladycats defense took care of business the final two minutes and the Ladycats had beaten Kilgore, 3-2.  After things settled down somewhat, Coach Absalom said “This is a great win for the Ladycats program.  I believe that this team is going in the right direction, and the enthusiasm for our program  is growing all the time.  The future looks good for Ladycats soccer.” Absalom mentioned the strong play of Lough and Mills in the middle, and of course Kelly, with the hat trick and the game winning goal.  “I am so proud of our players, and with the youth we have on the team things will only get better” commented Absalom as the team left the field.
02-05-99 Vs Palestine.  Ladycats won 5-0.  Friday night the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Palestine for a non-district match, coming home with a 5-0 victory.  The scoring for the Ladycats began in the 14th minute when Amanda Zapata made a good clearing pass deep to Jennifer Kammer running down the right side. Kammer collected the ball and passed to Erin Kelly who took the shot and scored.  One minute later Brittany Clements collected a loose ball and took a 30 yard shot that found the back of the net.  In the 28th minute Zapata again made a good clearing pass that found Kelly down field who took a left foot shot from about 20 yards out that beat the keeper, giving the Ladycats a 3-0 lead.
In the second half, at the 75 minute mark, Kelly this time assisted with a pass to Lanphear who finished the play with a goal from about 6 yards.  Then in the 80th minute Kelly finished out the scoring, and her hat trick, with a penalty kick goal to make the final score 5-0.  This was Kelly’s third hat trick of the season, and the Ladycats’ record for the season stands at 11-1-2.
02-08-99 Vs Mt. Pleasant.  Ladycats won 8-0. The Ladycats varsity team really turned it on and beat the Lady Tigers 8-0, scoring early and often.  Erin Kelly started the route with a 2nd minute goal, assisted by Jessica Lanphear with a good cross.  Three minutes later Brittany Clements made a good pass to Lanphear who touched the ball on to Walton.  Walton finished the play with a goal from about 8 yards out.  A few minutes later Lanphear again assisted on a goal, this time by Kelly again from 18 yards out. Later, Kelly scored again on another assist by Lanphear, then six minutes later it was Kelly again, assisted this time by Clements.  This was Kelly’s fourth goal of the game, and also her fourth game of the year with a hat trick.  Not long after that Lezlie O’Kelly found the goal on a nice 18 yard left footer, assisted by Clements.  In the 70th minute Dana Walton passed the ball to Kelly who headed it over to Lanphear.   Lanphear scored the goal, then four minutes later scored again on as assist by O’Kelly.
02-09-99 Vs Palestine.  The Ladycats won 3-0.  There was no score at the half, with the Ladycats being a bit unlucky, hitting the cross bar a couple times.  Early in the second half, Tory Mills passed a good ball down the left side to Erin Kelly. Kelly crossed a beautiful ball from the left corner which Miranda Logan headed into the corner of the goal from about 10 yards out, completing the classic soccer play.  In the 63td minute Brittany Clements launched a corner kick and Dana Walton this time finished the play with a good header from about 8 yards out.  Then, late in the game, Lezlie O’Kelly passed the ball deep down the left side to Walton who crossed to Tammy Garr.  Garr took a shot from 10 yards and beat the keeper  to the lower left corner.  The Ladycats record is now 13-1-2.
02-12-99 Vs Chapel Hill.  The Ladycats won 14-0. On Friday night the Chapel Hill Lady Bulldogs came to Whitehouse for a district soccer match against the Ladycats.  This proved to be a relatively easy game for the Ladycats, posting a 14-0 victory.  Scoring for the Ladycats were Dana Walton with two goals, Erin “Hat Trick” Kelly with six goals, Tory Mills with two goals, and one goal each by Lezlee O’Kelly, Kori Lough, Brittany Clements, and Jennifer Stone.  This is Kelly’s fifth game of the year with at least a hat trick, with this one being a double.  Assists for the Ladycats in this scoring barrage were made by Lanphear
with two, Lough two, Kelly with three, Walton with three, and one by Clements. The Ladycats record is now 14-1-2 overall and 4-0 in district play.
02-16-99 Vs  Mount Pleasant.  Ladycats won 1-0. Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats defeated the Lady Tigers from Mount Pleasant, 10-0, in a district soccer match.  Scoring for the Ladycats were Dana Walton with two goals, Erin Kelly with three goals, Tory Mills and Kori Lough with two goals each, and Jessica Lanphear with one. Providing the assists for the Ladycats were Kelly with two, Mills with two on corner kicks, Walton with three, and Lough, Lanphear, and Jennifer Stone with one each.  One of the goals by both Lough and Walton were on headers.  Coach John Absalom continues to see improvement by the Ladycats in the air, which is something he has worked on with the team this year.
02-19-99 Vs Pine Tree.  Ladycats won 2-0. Friday night the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team went to Pine Tree for a big district soccer match.  This was the first district meeting of the two teams this year, and the Ladycats came home with a very exciting 2-0 victory. The score was tied 0-0 at halftime and remained that way until the 60th minute.  At that point Pine Tree took a corner kick, and the ball was bouncing around in the penalty area, a very
dangerous situation for the Ladycats.  Erin Kelly finally controlled the ball just inside the 18 yard line and began dribbling out.  Most of the Pine Tree players were in the box trying to score on the corner kick, and this left only one defender back at midfield.  Kelly dribbled all the way across midfield to confront the defender who also was trying to keep an eye on Dana Walton on the left flank.  Walton played it perfectly, staying in an onside position until Kelly made the pass down the left side to her.  The Pine Tree sweeper hustled back to try to stop Walton, but Walton cut back toward the middle of the field at the edge of the penalty area and took a shot.  The ball went just to the left of the diving goalkeeper and grazed off the right post as it went into the net, giving the Ladycats a 1-0 lead. Then with one minute left in the game Erin Kelly took the ball into the area on the left side of the goal.  The keeper came out and there was a collision, but Kelly managed to cross the ball in front of the goal to a charging Tory Mills, who made no mistake in finishing the play from about 2 yards out. The final was 2-0 and this was another good win for the Ladycats, who are now 16-1-2 on the season, and 6-0 in district play.  This was goalkeeper Amanda Starkey’s 15th shutout, and the Ladycats now have an eighteen game unbeaten streak going.  Coach John Absalom praised the play of the Whitehouse defense, consisting of Junior sweeper Amanda Zapata, and three freshmen fullbacks, Brittany Clements, Jennifer Kammer, and Kristen Williams.
02-26-99 Vs Paris.  The Ladycats won 7-0.   Whitehouse scored early and often, winning 7-0.  Scoring for the Ladycats were Erin Kelly with 3 goals, Dana Walton with two, and Tory Mills with 2.  This was Kelly’s sixth game of the year with a hat trick in scoring.  Assisting on the goals for the Ladycats were Kori Lough with three, Raquel Wood, Kristen Williams, Kelly, and Jennifer Stone.  The Ladycats are now 17-1-2, and 7-0 in district play.
03-01-99 Vs Kilgore.  The Ladycasts won in a shootout. What a night!, Part 2.  Three weeks ago, the Whitehouse Ladycats defeated the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs in a district soccer match for the first time ever, and it was a great game.  Monday night the Ladycats traveled to Kilgore for the rematch, with the district lead on the line. It was a perfect night for soccer, and evidently the Lady Bulldogs felt it, because they came out firing.  The pace was fast as the game started, and Kilgore had some excellent scoring opportunities, but the Ladycats defense and goalkeeper Amanda Starkey kept them out of the goal.  Whitehouse also had some good shots, as the two teams tested both the goalkeepers and the woodwork during the game.  Midway through the first half, Ladycats Brittany Clements took a 30-yard free kick that hit the crossbar, and Kori Lough was there for the rebound, but the shot went just wide left, and the half ended 0-0. The second half was more of the same, as the tension and pace accelerated.  The young Whitehouse defense weathered several attacks, but never allowed a goal.  Amanda Zapata was assigned the task of marking Kilgore’s best forward, a very strong and fast player, and obviously the key to the Kilgore offense.  This was a battle all night long, very physical and intense, but Zapata got the best of it as the Kilgore forward was held scoreless.  Ladycats goalkeeper Starkey had a career game, stopping many shots of all kinds, in a performance that was as good as it gets. The Ladycats offense had some good chances during this half also, once with the Kilgore keeper on the ground after making a save, but the follow up shot went wide left once again.  Later, late in the half, Zapata took a free kick from the left side that hit the crossbar.  The Ladycats Tory Mills took a shot from about 20 yards out with ten seconds left that went just over the right corner of the goal, and the game ended 0-0.  This being a district game, a shootout was needed to determine a winner.  Each team would have an initial five chances, using the “Texas” shootout format, with the team scoring the most goals being the winner.  If still tied after five shots each, the shootout would continue one at a time until there was a winner after an equal number of shots. The Ladycats were selected to begin the shootout, and Kori Lough was up first.  Lough dribbled the ball a few yards and fired a shot into the lower left corner for the first goal. The Kilgore player followed with a goal, and it was tied again, 1-1.  The second player for Whitehouse, Erin Kelly, took the second shot and fired just high over the bar, and the next Kilgore player scored, and the Lady Bulldogs lead 2-1.  Ladycats Miranda Logan stepped up for the third round and solidly struck the ball into the right side of the goal.  The Kilgore player missed, and it was tied again, 2-2.  Dana Walton stepped up for the Ladycats fourth shot, and lifted a nice shot over the charging keeper into the net.  Kilgore also hit the next shot, making it 3-3.  The Ladycats Zapata was next up but the shot went wide.  Kilgore also missed the next shot, and it remained 3-3.  The round of five was now over, so it would be one shot for each team until there was a winner.  Tory Mills was selected to take the sixth shot for the Ladycats, but the Kilgore goalkeeper blocked it.  Now Kilgore was up with a chance to win, and the pressure was on for Ladycats keeper Starkey, who rose to the occasion and make a great save on the shot.
Brittany Clements for Whitehouse was called on to take the seventh round shot, and she made no mistake with a hard shot into the left side of the goal, putting the Ladycats ahead 4-3.  A Kilgore player stepped up now, having to make the shot in order to tie and continue the shootout. Starkey came charging hard out of the goal as the Kilgore player began her dribble, and the shot went wide and the Ladycats had won, 4-3!  The Ladycats are now 18-1-2, and 8-0 in district play.
03-05-99 The Whitehouse Ladycats hosted the Pine Tree Lady Pirates Friday night in the last home district soccer match of the season.  It was also Seniors night, with the five and last remaining players from the charter Ladycats soccer team being honored.  Recognized were Tammy Garr, Jennifer Stone, Kori Lough, Lezlee O’Kelly, and Amanda Starkey.  These players were members of the very first Ladycats soccer team four years ago, and will be missed.  Good luck in the future, ladies, and thanks for the memories! It was an exciting game, with both teams having some chances to score, but the first half ended 0-0.  The pace picked up a bit during the second half, but the game was suspended with about four and a half minutes left to play when the storm blew in.  After a delay of over an hour, the weather cleared enough to resume play.  Immediately the Ladycats had a great chance, with a shot from about six yards out going just wide, and the game ended still tied at 0-0.  The game would then be decided by a shootout, the second in a row for the Ladycats.
The Lady Pirates missed their first shot, and Kori Lough drilled the first shot for the
Ladycats, putting them ahead 1-0.  Both teams missed the second and third round shots, then Pine Tree hit their fourth shot and the Ladycats missed, and it was tied 1-1.  The fifth Pine Tree player stepped up and hit the shot, and the Ladycats were behind 1-2 with one shot left.  Unfortunately the last shot went wide left and the Ladycats had lost their first district game.
03-08-99 Ladycats Clinch District Soccer Title!  The Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Chapel Hill on Monday night for the last regular season game of the year.  The Ladycats won the game, and in the process clinched first place in the district!  “What a year,” said Coach John Absalom, who is in his first year as the Ladycats coach. “Nobody would have thought it!  I am proud of the players and how hard they have worked this year to make this happen.”
The game began slowly, but in the 28th minute Erin Kelly got off a cross from the left
corner that found Tory Mills, who took a one touch shot from 16 yards out that found the net in the lower left corner.  About four minutes later Amanda Zapata scored on a free kick from 38 yards out, putting the Ladycats up 2-0.  In the second half, at the 50th minute mark, Erin Kelly scored on a free kick from about 18 yards, then assisted Kori Lough on a 20 yard goal one minute later.  The final was 4-0, and the Ladycats ended the season as District Champs, with an over all record of 19-2-2, and 9-1 in district play. The Ladycats will play a preparation game on Friday night at 7:00 PM in Whitehouse versus the Lufkin Lady Panthers.  Next Tuesday will be the first playoff game, at 7:00 PM in Lufkin, with the opponent yet to be determined.  Congratulations, Ladycats, and good luck in the Playoffs!!
03-16-99 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Lufkin Tuesday night for a playoff
match versus West Orange Stark.  This was the first playoff game for the Ladycats, following a bye last week because they won first in the District. The Ladycats scored early when in the 3td minute fullback Kristen “Bit” Williams sent a pass up to midfielder Jessica Lanphear.  Lanphear collected the ball on the right side and crossed a great ball which found Erin Kelly wide open at the 6-yard line in front of the goal.  Kelly made a nice first touch and then placed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Ladycats a
1-0 lead.  Then in the 25th minute Lanphear sent a ball into the penalty area. The opposing
goalkeeper came out to collect the ball, but mishandled it and the Ladycats Dana Walton was there to put the ball into the empty net, and the half ended with the Ladycats leading 2-0. In the second half, at the 65 minute mark, Kori Lough fought for and took possession of the ball about 25 yards from the goal.  Lough took a preparation touch on the ball, then blasted a good shot that found the net over the keeper’s head, and the score was 3-0.  Three minutes later Walton took a hard shot that hit the crossbar and rebounded back onto the field.  Tammy Garr came rushing in to finish with a shot into the lower right corner of the net, closing out the scoring for the night, with the Ladycats winning 4-0.  In addition to the efforts on offense, the Ladycats defense did a good job, and goalkeeper Amanda Starkey posted yet another shut out, her 19th of the season.
03-19-99 The Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Pine Tree Friday night for a regional quarterfinal
playoff game with the Pine Tree Lady Pirates.  Pine Tree and Whitehouse, in the same district, had met 3 previous times this season with the Ladycats winning two of the three.  The Ladycats only district loss of the season had come at the hands of the Lady Pirates, that being in a shootout after a tie at the end of regulation. The game was very fast paced from the beginning and both teams seemed to have a playoff intensity through out the contest.  In the 17th minute Tory Mills placed a corner kick into the box at the near post and Kori Lough finished with a goal, and the Ladycats were up 1-0.  This put the very good crowd of a hundred or more Whitehouse fans into immense celebration.  But lightning struck quickly before the Ladycats realized the game was still on and the Lady Pirates scored a goal of their own less than a minute later, making a score of 1-1. The half ended at 1-1, but five minutes into the second half Whitehouse again scored off a corner kick by Mills.  The ball sailed into the penalty area and Lough went high to get a head on it, which kept the ball alive and away from the Pine Tree goalkeeper.  Finally Erin Kelly, the Ladycats leading scorer, got to the ball and slipped a shot into the net, giving the Ladycats the lead, 2-1. This score held until the 68th minute when the excellent forward from Pine Tree, Teresa Caine, took possession of the ball in Whitehouse territory and went the length of the field to score, tying the game at 2-2.  The game ended with the scored tied so two 10 minute periods would be played to determine a winner.  If still tied after these two periods, the game would be determined by a shootout.  Both teams were showing signs of fatigue at this point, but the level of play remained high and the intensity and excitement kept building.  There was no score after the first ten minute period, nor eight minutes into the second overtime period.  But then, without about two minutes left and the possibility of a shootout looming large, Mills crossed a ball into the area to Kelly. Kelly, as she has done all season, came though for the team as she made a nice first touch and took a shot from about 16 yards out that beat the Pine Tree keeper at the right post.  Oh my!  The Ladycats now had a 3-2 lead, and had only to keep Pine Tree out of the goal for two minutes, which they did.  What a game and what an effort by this Ladycats soccer team!  “This was a very good game against a good team with an outstanding offensive player, Teresa Caine”, said Ladycats Coach Absalom.  “The defense of Amanda Zapata, Brittany Clements, Kristen “Bit” Williams, and Jennifer Kammer did a good job all night, and kept us in the game.  Amanda Starkey, our goalkeeper, did a good job as she has all year and made a lot of saves tonight.” The Ladycats continue their playoff run on Tuesday night with a regional semifinal game against Friendswood, which will be played in Huntsville at 7:00 PM.
03-23-99 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer playoff season came to an end Tuesday night in
Huntsville with a 4-0 loss to Friendswood in the regional semifinal game.  The Ladycats, being young and without playoff experience at this level, were off balance during much of the first half. The Friendswood team was fast and composed, and seemed to be very comfortable with the pressure of a big game.  The Ladycats had opportunities with three corner kicks in the first two minutes of the game but just could not find the net. The remainder of the half belonged to Friendswood who scored three times, and the half ended with the Ladycats behind 3-0. The second half saw a much improved and settled Ladycats team.  The level of play went up, but the three goal deficient proved too much to overcome.  Whitehouse could not manage to score, but allowed only one goal in the second half, which was an own goal by a Ladycats defender while attempting a clearing header in the goal area. While the Ladycats are finished for the season, the Friendswood team is still playing and won their next game against Nederland 5-0, and will be making the trip to the state tournament.
