Game Summaries

01-11-00 Vs Nacogdoches:  Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycat soccer team opened their season hosting the Lady Dragons from Nacogdoches.   Nacogdoches took an early lead, scoring at the five minute mark on a free kick.  The Ladycats had a few good scoring opportunities as the first half progressed, but could not finish the plays, and the half ended 1-0.  Early into the second half, Ladycat Brittany Clements scored on a beautiful 35 yard free kick from the right side, knotting the score at 1-1.  From there, though, the Lady Dragons took control, scoring in the 46th, 49th, and 71st minutes to defeat the Ladycats, 4-1.  Coach John Absalom remarked that this is a young Ladycats team, and believes that improvement will come as the season progresses.
01-14-00 The Ladycats soccer team traveled to Killeen, Tx last weekend to participate in the Killeen Soccer Tournament.  First up for the Ladycats was the Kerrville Tivy.  The Ladycats stuck first in the 14th minute, as Amanda Zapata collected the ball on the left side of the field and passed to Jennifer Kammer in the middle. Kammer looked and passed the ball to Dana Walton who was making a run from right to left in the box.  Walton controlled the ball, made a preparation touch and shot the ball past the keeper into the right side of the goal, giving the Ladycats a 1-0 lead.  Later, in the second half in the 57th minute, Tory Mills gave a good thru ball from about the 40 yard mark to Brittany Clements down the left side. Clements controlled the ball with a couple of touches and took a great left foot shot, beating the keeper to the lower right corner of the goal, and the Ladycats were up, 2-0.  Kerrville scored in the 64th minute, but it was not enough and the Ladycats won, 2-1.

The evening game was against Cedar Park.  Things started off well for the Ladycats, as Brittany Clements made a long throw-in from the right side.  The ball bounced once and Ladycat Jessica Lanphaer came streaking in, beating the Cedar Park goalkeeper to the ball, heading the ball over her and into the goal from about 8 yards out.  Cedar Park scored twice in the first half, and the half ended with Cedar Park up, 2-1.  In the second half, in the 54th minute, Kristin “Bit” Williams made a good cross, which was headed out by the Cedar Park defense.  The ball came out toward Ladycat Dana Walton, who took a one touch shot from about 23 yards, and buried it into the right side of the net, making the score 2-2.   The score remained tied until late in the game when Cedar Park broke through and scored in the 73td minute to win, 3-2.

Saturday morning the Ladycats took on Lufkin, who had beaten the Ladycats earlier in the season in a scrimmage game, 6-0.  Lufkin scored at the 17 minute mark on a corner kick, and again two minutes later on a free kick, and the half ended with the Ladycats down, 2-0.  Things looked bleak at this point for the young Ladycat team, but they came out of the halftime break with a determination to make a showing.  The Ladycats controlled the play from the opening whistle of the second half, and finally found the net in the 77th minute.  A long ball from the middle of the field came in to Dana Walton at the top of the penalty box.  Walton flicked the ball over with her head, right to a streaking Miranda Logan coming in from the right side. Logan caught the ball in mid-air, volleying the ball past the keeper into the left side of the goal.  Even though the Ladycats completely controlled play for the remainder of the game, they could not get the tying goal, and were defeated 2-1.  Coach John Absalom said he was very proud of his team for the effort and moxie they displayed, and said that improvement was being seen every game.

The final game of the tournament for the Ladycats was against San Marcos.  In the 7th minute the Ladycats struck first with a cross from Dana Walton to Miranda Logan, who took the shot from about 8 yards out and scored.  Not long after that, in the 17th minute, Tory Mills for the Ladycats made a nice thru ball pass down the right side to Logan, who again scored, beating the San Marcos keeper from 10 yards out.  In the second half, at the 47th minute mark, Brittany Clements made another one of her patented long throw-ins, finding Logan again in the box, who finished with a goal, completing her hat trick for the game, and the Ladycats won 3-0.

Brittany Clements from Whitehouse was named to the All Tournament team.

01-18-00 Vs Lufkin:  Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats hosted the Lufkin Lady Panthers in non-district soccer action.  The Ladycats have lost twice already this season to Lufkin, once in a scrimmage game, 6-0, to begin the season and then again last weekend, 2-1, in the Killeen tournament.  But this night was a different night!   Coach John Absalom had promised improvement as the season progressed, and the improvement was displayed during this game. But early in the game, in the 2nd minute, before the Ladycats had broken a sweat, a Lufkin striker took a quick and accurate shot from the edge of the eighteen yard box that hit the back of the net, putting the Ladycats behind, 1-0.  This early goal could have been an opportunity for the young Ladycats team to falter, but they did the opposite.  Sixteen minutes later, Brittany Clements made a throw-in deep into the penalty area which bounced around and was finally cleared out by a Lufkin defender.  The ball came out about 30 yards from the goal towards Kristin “Bit” WilliamsWilliams stepped toward the ball and took a hard shot that went high in the goal over the opposing keeper’s head, knotting the score at 1-1.
In the second half, at the 48 minute mark, Clements again started a goal scoring play as she stole the ball from a Lufkin player at midfield.  Clements dribbled past a couple of defenders, spotted Miranda Logan rushing down the left side toward the corner of the field, and passed her the ball.  Logan made a good hard cross into the box and the Lufkin defenders partially cleared the ball, but at the top of the penalty area Dana Walton one touched the ball back toward the goal to about the 6 yard mark.  The goalkeeper came out to collect the ball, but Ladycats Tory Mills beat her to it by a fraction of a second and lifted it over her head and into the goal, putting the Ladycats ahead for good, 2-1. A few minutes later Clements again figured into a scoring play when she crossed the ball into the penalty area where Logan shot the ball into the lower left corner of the net, and the Ladycats were up 3-1. Then, to finish off the scoring, Erica Swinford took an assist from Logan and shot the ball again into the lower left corner for the final goal, giving the Ladycats a 4-1 victory.   Coach Absalom was happy with the offensive effort, but also credited good defensive work and overall play from Amanda Zapata, Christina Courville, Williams, Clements, goalkeeper Jennfier Kammer
01-21-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Lumberton last weekend to participate in the Hardin County Cup soccer tournament, and brought home the Championship trophy, going 5-0.  The Ladycats opened with a match against Little Cypress Mauriceville, winning 2-0, with both goals by Brittany Clements and both assists by Tory Mills.

The second game for the Ladycats was versus Lumberton, with the Ladycats winning 4-0.  The first three goals were by Erin Kelly, Erica Swinford, and Miranda Logan, all three assisted by Dana WaltonJessica Holdway tallied the final goal, assisted by Mary Zanolini.

Next up was Crosby, and the Ladycats defeated them in a 35 yard type shootout after regulation time ended with the score 0-0.  First up in the shootout for the Ladycats was Logan, who calmly put the ball into the right side of the goal.  Players for both teams failed to score until the 5th round when Ladycats Mills converted her attempt to seal the victory.  Ladycats goalkeeper Jennifer Kammer came up big in the shootout, stopping two shots by Crosby that were on goal.

The Ladycats played Dickinson next, winning 3-1. Kelly opened the scoring for  Whitehouse with a great 20 yard left foot shot after taking a pass from Mills down the left side of the field.  Later in the first half Dickinson scored and the half ended, 1-1.  Early in the second half Clements made a long throw in to the top of the eighteen yard box.  Kelly got to the ball and trapped it down to Mills, who took a once touch shot that found the lower right corner of the goal from about 18 yards out, giving the Ladycats the lead, 2-1.  A few minutes later Mills finished out the scoring with a beautiful 25 yard free kick that went into the upper left corner, and the Ladycats were headed to the Championship game.

The Championship game was against Port Neches Grove, with the Ladycats taking a 4-0 victory.  Whitehouse open the scoring in the 7th minute off a corner kick by Mills that Logan finished from inside the box.  In the 19th minute Jessica Lamphear assisted Logan who again found the net, giving the Ladycats the lead, 2-0.  Then, in the 24th minute, Kelly passed the ball to Logan, who scored again and completed her hat trick for the game.  In the 58th minute Logan this time made the assist with a nice pass to Mills, who scored on a 20 yard shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
The Ladycats defenders, Amanda Zapata, Christina Courville, Clements, and Raquel Wood, along with goalkeeper Kammer, had a good tournament, allowing only 1 goal in the five games.

01-24-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team spent a very chilly, but very satisfying, evening in Pine Tree last Tuesday night as they took on the Lady Pirates in a non-district soccer match.  The game started out on a bad note as the Ladycats made an early error and Pine Tree took advantage for an easy goal in the 12th minute.  But the Ladycats shook it off and tied the game in the 32nd minute.  Miranda Logan made a nice pass into space to beat her defender at about the 40 yard mark, and then raced past to collect the ball again.  Logan dribbled to the right corner and crossed the ball to Dana Walton, positioned at the top of the 18 yard box.  Walton collected the ball, made a good juke to get around the defender, and took a shot from 14 yards out that found the lower right corner of the goal, tying the game at 1-1.  Early in the second half, Brittany Clements made a long throw into the box in front of the Pine Tree goal.  A Pine Tree defender was positioned to head the ball out of danger but Tory Mills jumped up to challenge her, and the ball went off their heads to Erin Kelly near the center of the box.  Kelly touched the ball over to Miranda Logan who took a one touch shot into the left side of the goal, giving the Ladycats the lead, and the game, 2-1.  The Ladycats defense, led by Amanda Zapata who had a good game, and goalkeeper Jennfier Kammer, played well.
02-02-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Kilgore for a big non-district match Tuesday night.  The game started out on a good note for the Ladycats, with Miranda Logan scoring in the 11th minute off an assist by Dana Walton.  Later, in the 26th minute, Logan collected the ball off a poor punt by the Kilgore goalkeeper and scored an unassisted goal, putting the Ladycats up, 2-0.
Early in the second half the Kilgore squad scored, cutting the Ladycats lead to 2-1, and the score remained this way until 3 minutes left in the contest.  As the ball was in the Ladycats defensive end of the field, a cross by a Kilgore player was accidentally redirected by a Whitehouse player into the Ladycats goal, tying the score at 2-2, and that’s the way the game ended.  Coach John Absalom said that the Kilgore team was very good, with some good talent, and was proud of the Ladycats effort.  Absalom noted the defensive effort of Brittany Clements who was assigned the task of covering Kendra Cannon, the outstanding forward for Kilgore.  Also playing well in the defense was Amanda Zapata, Raquel Wood, and Samatha Carns. This puts the Ladycats record for the season at 9-3-1.
02-04-00 On Friday night the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team was hosted by Mt. Pleasant in non-district soccer match.  The outcome was never in doubt as the Ladycats took control early and never looked back, winning by an 8-0 score.
Scoring for the Ladycats was Miranda Logan, with another hat trick, and then one goal each by Erica Swinford, Tory Mills, Jennifer Kammer, Erin Kelly, and Jessica Lanphear.  Assisting on these goals were Brittany Clements with four, Lanphear, Heather Yarbrough, and Samatha Carns with one each.
In goal for the Ladycats was Jennifer Kammer and Jocelyn Schmidt, and the Ladycats record improves to 10-3-1 for the season.
02-08-00 On Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats hosted Pine Tree in a non-district soccer match.  The game was a defensive one, with the final score being 0-0.  During the first half play, Ladycat Samatha Carns took a long hard shot that rebounded off the Pine Tree keeper. Tory Mills rushed in to finish the play with a goal, but the Linesman’s flag was up, signaling Mills offside and the goal was not tallied.  Late in the same half, it was Pine Tree’s turn to have a goal disallowed as the last second of the half ticked away just before a shot found the net.  Whitehouse defender Amanda Zapata had a solid game, keeping the Ladycats out of trouble on many occasions.  Goalkeeper Jennifer Kammer got the shutout, and the Ladycats are 10-3-2 on the season.
02-12-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team hosted North Lamar High School Saturday in a non-district game.  The outcome was never in doubt, with the Ladycats winning 4-1.  Brittany Clements started the scoring for the Ladycats in the 19th minute with a beautiful left footer into the lower right corner of the goal from about 20 yards out.  In the 25th minute North Lamar scored, tying the game at 1.  Ten minutes later Clements again found the net after collecting an errant goal kick by the North Lamar keeper.  Three minutes later Clements took a pass from Amanda Zapata and scored again, completing her hat trick for the day.   The second half was uneventful as Coach John Absalom used the opportunity to rearrange the lineup, trying players in different positions and allowing playing time for all.  The Ladycats finished the scoring in the 70th minute with a great header by Jessica Lanphear off a corner kick by Clements. Jocelyn Schmidt was in goal for the Ladycats and did a good job.  The Ladycats are now 11-3-2.
02-14-00 On Monday night the Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Hudson to open district play.  This is the first season of soccer for Hudson and it was very evident that they have a long learning process in front of them.  The Ladycats scored early and often on the way to a 14-0 win, with the first goal coming in the 4th minute by Kristin “Bit” Williams, assisted by Erica Swinford.  Other Ladycat scorers on the night were Swinford, Brittany Clements (6), Mary Zanolini, Erin Kelly, Raquel Wood, Jessica Lanphear, Amy Garrett, and Heather Yarbrough.  Assisting on these goals were Swinford (3), Kelly (3), Lanphear, Yarbrough, Jocelyn Schmidt, Wood (3), and Clements.  The Ladycats record now stands at 13-3-2 for the season and 1-0 in district play.
02-18-00 Friday night the Whitehouse Ladycats hosted the Jacksonville Maidens in a district soccer match.  The Ladycats scored first in the 27th minute when Brittany Clements sent a nice corner kick into the box which Tory Mills headed over to Cristina Courville. Courville calmly struck the ball into the goal, giving the Ladycats a 1-0 lead.  Four minutes later Tory Mills collected the ball near midfield and made a nice pass across the field to Brittany Clements. Clements passed the ball on to Miranda Logan who shot and found the net, giving Whitehouse the lead, 2-0.  In the second half in the 65th minute Clements scored on a beautiful 35 yard free kick and then just two minutes later Clements again hit a 35 yarder for a goal during play, and the Ladycats won 4-0.  Whitehouse is now 14-3-2, and 2-0 in district play.
03-04-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Jacksonville on Saturday for a district soccer match, and came home a winner, 7-2.  The Ladycats scored early and often, with the first goal coming in the 7th minute by Erin Kelly, assisted by Brittany ClementsKelly scored two more goals during the game, and also scoring for the Ladycats were Christina Courville with three goals and Miranda Logan with one. Clements had two more assists, and there were assists by Kelly with two, Logan with one, and Kristen “Bit” Williams with one.   The Ladycats are now 16-3-2, and 5-0 in district play.
03-06-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats defeated Chapel Hill on Monday night in a district soccer match, 2-0.  Erin Kelly scored both goals for the Ladycats, assisted by Brittany Clements and Amanda Zapata.  This makes the Ladycats record 17-3-2 on the season, and 5-0 in district play.
03-07-00 Last Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats hosted Chapel Hill in the last scheduled  district soccer match of the season.  The Ladycats won, 8-0, and finished district play with a perfect 6-0 record, and are 18-3-2 on the season.  Scoring for the Ladycats were Erin Kelly (2), Brittany Clements (4), Tory Mills, and Miranda Logan.  Assists on these goals were made by Clements, Kristen “Bit” Williams (2), Kelly (3), Heather Yarbrough, and Raquel Wood.  The Ladycats will play the winner of the other zone, Pine Tree, for the District Championship on Saturday.
03-11-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats and the Pine Tree Lady Pirates met on Saturday in Whitehouse for a soccer match to decide the District Championship.  It was a hard luck day for the Ladycats, who saw their hopes for a second consecutive championship slip away on two first half goals by Pine Tree, both on free kicks from about 25 yards out.  These goals were the only goals of the game, and Whitehouse lost, 0-2.  The Ladycats had several opportunities during the play but just could not find the net, once with the Pine Tree goalkeeper still on the ground after punching a shot away.  The Ladycats finished the season with an 18-4-2 record and had a good year.  Way to go Ladycats!!
But the Ladycats are still in the playoff picture as the Distict runnerup, and will have a warmup game against Palestine on Friday night in Whitehouse.  The first playoff game opponent and site are still to be determined.
03-31-00 The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team traveled to Lufkin Friday night for a playoff game against Nederland, the 8th ranked team in the state.  The Ladycats were ready to play, and started the game off with a bang, scoring two goals early, but could not hold on in the second half, finally losing 5-3.

Erica Swinford scored in the 6th minute of the game for the Ladycats with a tremendous shot from about 18 yards out, off a poor clearance from a Nederland defender, and the Ladycats were up early, 1-0.  Whitehouse kept the pressure on and twelve minutes later Miranda Logan made a nice pass to Tory Mills, who was standing unmarked about 22 yards out.  Mills trapped the ball, made a nice preparation touch, and then blasted the ball into the upper right corner of the goal, and the Ladycats were up, 2-0.  But Nederland did not panic, and scored two goals of their own in the 25th and 28th minutes, and the first half ended tied, 2-2.

Five minutes into the second half Nederland scored again, and then again in the 64th minute, giving them a 4-2 lead.  Things were looking bleak for the Ladycats, but they kept playing and turned up the pace a notch themselves.  In the 75th minute, Logan was fouled in the penalty area which resulted in a penalty kick awarded to Whitehouse.  This was excellent opportunity for the Ladycats to get back in the game, and Mills stepped up to the mark and calmly and decisively shot the ball in the lower left corner of the goal, bringing the Ladycats within 1.  With only five minutes remaining, the Ladycats kept the pressure on, bringing forward all field players and keeping the ball in front of the Nederland goal, trying desperately to get the equalizer.  But with about a minute left to play, Nederland collected the ball and made a race downfield toward the near empty Ladycats  net, and scored, making the final score 5-3, ending the Ladycats season.

Coach Absalom said he is proud of his team, who played well against a very good opponent, remarking that the Ladycats were still a young team, with a good outlook for next year. The Ladycats season record was 19-5-2, and they were 6-1 in district play.
