| 01-05-01: The Whitehouse
Ladycats soccer team participated in the John Tyler soccer tournament last
weekend, bringing home third place. Coach John Absalom
was pleased with the team’s performance, keeping in mind that it was the
first week of the season.
The opening game was against the REL JV, and the Ladycats won 2-0 with goals by Brittany Clements and Erin Kelly, and assists by Kelly and Dana Walton. The Ladycats also won the second game VS the PT JV, 4-3. Scoring for the Ladycats were Clements, Walton (2), and Tory Mills. Providing the assists were Jessica Lanphear, Erin Kelly, and Clements (2). For the third game the Ladycats met a very good Lufkin team, losing 0-2. The Ladycats then played John Tyler in the 3td place
game, winning 1-0, in a hard fought contest. In the 20th minute Kelly
collected a loose ball on the left side, dribbled down the field and took
a left footed shot that found the net for what to proved to be the game
winning goal.

| 01-09-01: The Whitehouse
Ladycats hosted Nacogdoches Tuesday night in a non-district soccer
match. The Lady Dragons proved too much on this night for the Ladycats,
going home to Nacogdoches with a 3-0 victory.
01-12/13-01: The following weekend the Ladycats traveled to Kileen for tournament play, coming home after going 1-2. The Ladycats won their opening game versus Harker Heights, 1-0, on a goal by Kim Seliga, assisted by Erin Kelly and Jessica Lanphear. The game winning goal was freshman Seliga's first Whitehouse varsity goal. The Ladycats next opponent was Copperas Cove and after a hard fought contest the Ladycats came up short, losing 3-4. Scoring the goals for Whitehouse were Erin Kelly (2) and Dana Walton off assists by Brittany Clements and Kim Seliga. The third game for Whitehouse was against Lufkin, and
for the second time this season the Lady Panthers beat the Ladycats, this
time 0-4. The Ladycats are now 4-4 on the season and their next game
is at John Tyler versus the Lady Lions.
|
| 01-23-01: On Tuesday night the Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Nacogdoches for a non-district soccer match, hoping to avenge an early season loss. And avenge they did, totally controlling the entire match and coming away with a 3-0 victory. In the 23rd minute Raquel Wood took a long shot from about 40 yards, which the keeper mishandled, and Tory Mills raced in to finish, giving the Ladycats the lead, 1-0. In the second half Erin Kelly scored an unassisted goal with a beautiful shot from about 35 yards. Later, with about 8 minutes to play, Wood counted her second assist of the game by giving Brittany Clements a nice ball, which Clements converted for the final goal of the game. The Ladycats JV also won, 2-0, with two goals by Heather Swink and one assist by Misha Pierce. |
| 01-25-01: Thursday night the Ladycats visited John Tyler, and once again come home with a victory, 4-2. The Ladycats scored twice in the first half with goals by Erin Kelly, assisted by Tory Mills, and Heather Yarbrough, assisted by Kelly. The Lady Lions struck in the last minute of the first half, which ended with the Ladycats ahead, 2-1. The score remained unchanged until late in the game as the play intensified and the scoring came often. In the 73rd minute Yarbrough this time assisted Kelly on a goal, but three minutes later the Lady Lions came back with a goal of their own, pulling within one. But just a minute later the Ladycats put the game away with a goal by Brittany Clements, assisted by Kelly. The JV also fought a hard game, but came up short this time, 0-1. |
| 01-27-01: The Ladycats next game was Saturday as they hosted The Longview Lady Lobos, the third consecutive game against a 5A school. The Ladycats scored early when Kristin "Bit" Williams stole the ball from a Lobo player and made a nice pass up to Erin Kelly. Kelly dribbled the ball nicely down the left side and then crossed the ball into the penalty area where Brittany Clements came onto it, touching it past the onrushing keeper and finished with a 3 yard shot. A few minutes later, though, the Lady Lobos took advantage of a miscommunication in the Ladycats defense and scored an easy equalizer. This proved to be the only mistake the defense would make on the day, and the Ladycats went ahead in the 34th minute with a second goal by Clements, assisted on a long ball from the back by Dana Walton, and half ended with Ladycats up, 2-1. In the second half, at the 55 minute mark, Jessica Lanphear collected an errant goal kick and fired a good cross to Kelly at the penalty mark which Kelly collected and slotted home into the lower right corner of the net. The scoring for the day ended in the 58th minute on a play that began deep in the Ladycats end of the field. Tory Mills collected a ball, made a nice move and passed to Clements, just shy of midfield. Clements looked up and spotted Kelly on the move and hit her with a good through ball in the center of the field. Kelly collected and took a couple touches to set up her shot, which was successful, and the Ladycats won, 4-1. The Ladycats coach, John Absalom, praised his team's effort and play, and was very proud of the streak of wins versus the larger schools. |
| 01-30-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Palestine on Tuesday night for a non-district soccer match. The Ladycats opened the scoring early, with a 2nd minute goal. Brittany Clements made one of her patented long throw-ins, which was headed over to the top of the 18 yard box by Jessica Lanphear. Tory Mills was there, and took a one touch shot which found the lower left corner of the net, giving the Ladycats an early lead, 1-0. Later, in the 25th minute, Clements again took a long throw-in into the penalty area where Bonny Freeman came crashing in and took herself, a defender, and the ball into the goal, and the Ladycats were up, 2-0. Palestine scored later in the second half on a nice free kick shot, but it wasn’t enough, and the Ladycats notched another victory, 2-1, and are now 8-4 on the season. |
| 02-09-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team opened
district play Friday night by hosting a very good Kilgore team, and it
proved to be great night for the home team. The Ladycats were up
for this game, and got the scoring started early on a play in the 12th
minute which began with Jessica Lanphear collecting a ball in the
Ladycats end of the field. This started the Ladycats patented version
of the fast break, which has become very familiar to Ladycats fans the
last couple years. Lanphear passed the ball to the center
of the field to Tory Mills, who one touched back to the outside
to Erin Kelly. Kelly spotted Brittany Clements
making a diagonal run and passed the ball down the right side to her.
The Kilgore goal keeper came out, but it was too late as Clements
touched the ball around her and shot into an empty net from about 18 yards,
and just like that it was 1-0.
Early in the second half, at the 46th minute mark, Clements again scored, this time on a corner kick that beat the Kilgore keeper again as the ball went directly into the net. But Kilgore did not quit, and scored a goal of their own two minutes later. Ten minutes later, on another quick strike by the Ladycats, Clements again took a pass from Kelly and scored on a beautiful shot from the right side from about 35 yards out, completing her hat trick for the game. In the 63rd minute Clements sent another great corner kick into the goal box in the middle of the Kilgore defense. Kristin “Bit” Williams came running in from the outside, cutting through the defenders, and beat her marker to the ball for a header that was one of the best goals of the Ladycats season. This gave the Ladycats a 4-1 lead, which was the final score, and the Ladycats are now 9-4 for the season and 1-0 in district play. The Ladycats goalkeeper, Katherine Bitter, made several outstanding saves during the game, and defensive marker Raquel Wood did a great job of shutting down Kindra Cannon, the outstanding forward and goal scorer for Kilgore. Also, the rest of the defense, consisting of fullbacks Jessica Holdway and Erica Swinford and led by a solid performance by sweeper Dana Walton, had a good game in thwarthing the potent Kilgore offense. |
| 02-13-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats hosted Pine Tree on Tuesday night for a district soccer match. Pine Tree scored early, in the 6th minute, and again in the 23rd minute, and the first half ended with the Ladycats behind, 0-2. The Lady Pirate's speed and skill were a bit much for the Ladycats, but the second half seemed to be better for the home team. Although the Ladycats could not get much offense going, the defense held Pine Tree scoreless in the second half until a very late goal with about 36 seconds left in the game, and the final score was 0-3. The Ladycats are now 9-5 on the season and 1-1 in district play. |
| 02-16-01:Chapel Hill came to the Ladycats' house for a district soccer match on Friday night and went home the worse for it. The Ladycats scored early and often, with Tory Mills beginning the rout with a goal in the 4th minute off an assist by Erin Kelly. Just four minutes later, Kelly had a good shot on goal that the Chapel Hill keeper stopped but could not control. The ball bounced away a few yards and Brittany Clements came in and finished the goal. Two minutes later Jessica Lanphear collected a ball deep in Chapel Hill territory and scored an unassisted goal, making it 3-0 at this point. In the 16th minute the Ladycats were called for a foul about 20 yards out, and a Chapel Hill player make a nice shot for the goal. But the Ladycats scored one, two, and ten minutes later, on another goal by Kelly and Clements, and a goal by Dana Walton. The goal by Kelly was assisted by Lanphear, with the other goals being unassisted. Early in the second half Clements scored again, assisted by Lanphear, and the score now was 7-1. One minute later the Ladycats were called for a foul in the penalty box, and Chapel Hill converted the penalty kick with a nice shot for a goal. In the 36th minute Clements scored her fourth goal of the game off an assist again by Lanphear. Chapel Hill scored the final goal of the game in the last few minutes, and the Ladycats won 8-3. The Ladycats are now 10-5 on the season, and 2-1 in district play. |
| 02-24-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats traveled to Jacksonville for a district soccer match, and came home a winner, 2-0. The game was played during the rain, and on a sloppy field, which matched the play for the most part. The Ladycats scored early, in the 2nd minute, with a goal by Brittany Clements, assisted by Raquel Wood. In the second half Tory Mills assisted on a goal by Jessica Lanphear for the Ladycats final goal of the game. Kathryn Bitter got the clean sheet in goal for the Ladycats. The Ladycats are 11-5 on the season, and 3-1 in district play. |
| 02-26-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats visited the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs for a district soccer game rematch. The Ladycats had beaten Kilgore in the first round of district play, but could not match that effort on this night. Kilgore scored in the 10th minute of play, after a very questionable no call when Kathryn Bitter, the Ladycats goal keeper, was knocked to the ground in the goal area. Just five minutes later Kilgore scored a second goal, and just like that the Ladycats were in a hole, 0-2. The Ladycats were fortunate to hold on the remainder of the first half at that score, and the half ended that way. But the second half saw a more determined Ladycat team and Kilgore was under constant attach for much of the time. Finally, in the 67th minute, the Ladycats broke though when Erin Kelly sent a nice ball up to Brittany Clements racing down the center of the field toward the goal. Clements collected the ball and sent a shot past the onrushing goalkeeper that found the back of the net, and the game was on in earnest at the point. Although the Ladycats kept the pressure on, and had many shots and opportunities for the remainder of the game, the equalizing goal never came. The Ladycats are now 11-6 on the season, and 3-2 in district play. |
| 03-05-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats visited Chapel Hill on Monday night for a district soccer match, and came away with another victory, 3-1. The Ladycats scored first in the 21st minute on a goal by Tory Mills, assisted by Erin Kelly. Kelly sent a nice pass to Mills who got past the last defender at about the 18, dribbled toward the Chapel Hill keeper, and then slotted the ball nicely into the lower right corner from about seven yards out. Two minutes later, Mills then assisted Kelly on a goal, which was a nice shot from about 18 yards out. Chapel Hill scored in the second half to make it a game, at 2-1, but then the Ladycats scored the insurance goal at the 68th minute mark with an unassisted goal by Brittany Clements from the middle of the penalty area. The Ladycats are now 12-6 on the season, and 4-2 in district play. |
| 03-10-01:Saturday’s soccer match for the Whitehouse
Ladycats saw a great effort against a good team, but with a heartbreaking
result. The Ladycats traveled to Pine Tree for a second round district
soccer match against the defending, and undefeated in district play, Lady
Pirates.
The Ladycats had a couple scoring opportunities in the first half, with the best one coming off a cross by Brittany Clements. Clements sent the ball into the box, and the Pine Tree goalkeeper came out to collect it, but was contested strongly for the ball by Ladycats striker Erin Kelly. The keeper went down, and the ball bounced free and was rolling diagonally across the penalty area. Tory Mills frantically chased it down, knowing the goal was open at the moment, and made a nice shot from a tough angle that was on frame. But a Pine Tree defender, realizing that her keeper was out of the play, did her job and retreated to the goal line and cleared away the shot at the last second. The game after that went back and forth, and the first half ended tied, 0-0. Five minutes into the second half, disaster struck for the Ladycats. Pine Tree had the ball and was attacking the Ladycats goal when a cross was sent into the box. There was the normal pushing and jostling between players as a Ladycats defender attempted to clear the ball, and her foot did not connect squarely on the ball as a result of the contact. The ball spun off, and up, and into the goal for a Pine Tree score. This was a blow to the Ladycats, but they kept their heads up, and continued to play hard. Although Pine Tree controlled most of the play during the remainder of the game, the Ladycats defense, led by a strong and steady performance by Dana Walton and an absolutely great effort by goalkeeper Katheryn Bitter, never allowed a goal, and the game ended in Pine Tree’s favor 1-0. The other members of the great defensive lineup that performed well were Jessica Holdway, Nicole Cleveland, and Raquel Wood. |
| 03-13-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats played their
last regular season match, and last home match, of the year on Tuesday
night against Jacksonville. It was also Senior night as the seniors
and their parents were recognized in a pre-game ceremony. The Ladycats
Seniors are Bonnie Freeman, Jykyesha Johnson, Erin Kelly, Tory Mills, Dana
Walton, and Heather Yarbrough. These fine players, and great young
ladies, will be missed tremendously, and we all wish them the very best
in the future.
The match began with a bang, with a 1st minute Ladycats goal by Raquel Wood, assisted by Kristin “Bit” Williams. Jacksonville knotted the score ten minutes later with a goal of their own, and the first half ended, 1-1. Just two minutes into the second half the Ladycats again found the net with a goal by Erin Kelly, assisted by Brittany Clements. Three minutes later, it was turn about time, as Kelly then assisted Clements for the insurance goal, making it 3-1 Ladycats. Jacksonville scored a few minutes later, but it too little too late for the Lady Indians, and the final score was 3-2 for the Ladycats. The Ladycats finished 13-7 in the regular season, 5-3 in district play, and second place in the district standings. Congratulations to the Ladycats team, and Coach John Absalom! The Ladycats begin the playoffs with a game versus Mt. Pleasant, in Longview, on Friday night. Good luck! |
| 03-16-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer team began
post season play Friday night by traveling to Longview for a match with
Mt. Pleasant. The Ladycats jumped ahead early, in the 12th minute,
with a nice 20 yard blast by Erin Kelly, off an assist by Mary Zanolini
who played a perfect pass back to Kelly right outside the penalty area.
The Ladycats had many opportunities to score the remainder of the half,
but could not again find the net.
The second half began much the same way, with the Ladycats having the best of the play, taking shot after shot. Then, beginning at the 61st minute mark, the Ladycats scored three goals in less than ten minutes. Kim Seliga found a loose ball coming to her from the right side, about 20 yards out, and took a one touch shot that went into the back corner of the net, making the score 2-0. Seven minutes later Brittany Clements gave Kelly a nice ball which she took advantage of to notch her second goal of the game. One minute later Clements scored a goal of her own, assisted nicely by Tory Mills. The Ladycats defense, solidly led and organized by Dana Walton, never really gave Mt. Pleasant any real scoring opportunities. Defender Nicolle Cleveland also had a big part in the stubborn defensive effort by playing a wonderful game, stepping up time after time to intercept the ball before the opposing forwards could collect it and begin an attack. Goalkeeper Jocelyn Schmidt, filling in for injured Kathryn Bitter, did a good job and helped preserve the shutout. As reward for victory, the Ladycats will continue in the playoffs, with the next game on Monday night in Lindale versus Red Oak. |
| 03-19-01:The Whitehouse Ladycats soccer season
came to an end after losing a 2nd round playoff game to Red Oak last
night in Lindale. The Ladycats fought bravely against a very good
team in spite of playing without some key players, and the final score
was 0-3. A bright spot for the Ladycats was the young goalkeeper
Jocelyn Schmidt, filling in for injured Katheryn Bitter. Schmidt
was under pressure for long periods, and made some good saves helping to
keep the Ladycats in the game. Midfielder Tory Mills played smoothly
in the center of the field, controlling the ball and making nice passes,
but the Red Oak defense was too tough and the Ladycats could not break
through.
The Ladycats had a good season and we enjoyed watching and following them. Congratulations, ladies, and we’ll miss all you seniors next year! Good Luck! |
